Alchemy

Alchemy is the art and science of purifying the self and the world. It's as much a spiritual journey as any other form of magic. The problem is that a lot of people don't realise that. To the uninitiated, the big schtick of alchemists is the potions they make, but there's far more even to them than meets the eye. An alchemical potion is an expression of a profound truth, it is a manifestation of the alchemist's path to per…

The Powers of Ash are the Lords of the Burned Realm. They govern the dead, the destroyed, and that which has gone before. They are neither malevolent nor benevolent, although they do have an abiding hatred for necromancy (which is a usurpation of their powers and as such also falls within the purview of Ash sorcery).

On the Nature of Stars

Ultimately, the nature of stars is indeterminate. Nobody's ever got to look at one up close, so most of what is known about their nature is based on speculation. They are widely accounted to be in some way associated with the Light, and indeed this is the doctrine of the Temple of the Light. However, there are also those who claim that they are strange and distant Princes of Breath, that they are fragments of some Vitriarch or other, that they are the oldest of the Old P…

The Powers

The Old Powers are... and that's pretty much all you can say about them. They just kind of... are. They tend to be vast impersonal natural forces. Powers of the forest and the mountain, of the river and the sea. They are resolutely physical. Alone of the gods, the Old Powers seem to reside full time in the physical world. As you may guess from the name, Blood magic is a visceral business, and its practitioners tend to be very slightly barking mad.

Chain magic is unlike most other forms of magic in that the Powers with which it is associated are subservient to its power rather than being the sources of it. There are now very few Ordained Chain Sorcerors, since the Bound Ones have little power left in the world. Blindfighting

Q: Can blindfighting be disrupted by shouting at the combatant?

A: No, blindfighters can't be blinded by shouting loudly at them; their skills are such as to be able to blindfight in most battles, so it takes a really astounding amount of noise to 'blind' them. Stampeding elephants is the level we're talking.

The Vitriarchs of the Shattered Plain are strange and mad and make others mad. The practice of Glass magic is forbidden in the White City (except in self-defence), and is completely forbidden in most other city-states. Historically, only the Port of Glass permits (and indeed encourages) the worship of the Glass Powers, although a recent treaty between the Port and the White City has legalised the worship of the Vitriachs within the White City.

The Light is pure. The Light is white. The Light blinds those fortunate enough to look upon it. The Light protects us, purifies us and brings us to a “higher place”. The Light treads that fine line between “benevolent” and “f*cker”. Its followers do an awful lot of good work in the White City, indeed they were instrumental in its foundation, but when you get right down to it there's something not right about a religion that thinks being blinded is a good thing.

The first and most massively important thing to be said about magic items is this. There is no such thing as a magic item. There are swords carved out of the bones of dragons, talismans made from the chains worn by the first of the Cloistered Brethren of Chains during the Binding War and flutes made from reeds cut from the banks of the River of Whispers and anointed with the tears of blind men, but there are no “magic items”. 'Character development' is a process whereby the personality of a character and the audience's understanding of that personality, and of the motivations of the character that have guided their actions up to this point, expand and grow.
